Katherine Freygang

Biography

Katherine Freygang, is an artist, designer and educator dedicated to the study and enhancement of our ecological balance and cultural understanding. She is noted for her ability to weave architectural space, images, sound, and audience participation into experiences that foster learning, imagination, and lasting memory. As Principal of Katherine Freygang Design in New York City, for decades she has worked as a museum exhibit designer in Children’s, Science and Natural History Museums, an educator for ages K-16 and as an environmental artist.

From the Algonquin Indian Village at the Children’s Museum in Boston, through the renovation of the Ellis Island Museum, and the History of Paleo-Anthropology exhibit at the Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, she has taken projects to expand the discourse and understanding of our evolving planet.

Since the 1990’s Katherine had added elements to promote social action such as in the Doll Project, an international expression of women’s voices for the UN Conference on Women in Beijing, the Firehouse Space, a community center and exhibition space in Lower Manhattan after 9/11, and the River Project at Artwell Gallery, a series of events and exhibitions that celebrate the essential nature of the Housatonic River.

Most recently, Katherine has been painting a new series, Denali to Death Valley, studies of geologic form, as well as presenting programs in schools and municipalities to raise awareness about energy and conservation issues with the Hudson River Pageant in New York and the CT Clean Energy Fund (CEFIA) in Connecticut.

Recognition for this work was made through the American Association of Museums Conference, the City of New York, and in 2009 the Governor’s Leadership Award in Connecticut (along with Connecticut College).

Currently, Katherine Freygang serves as Trustee Emeritus at Rhode Island School of Design, Trustee of Artwell Gallery in Torrington CT and Earth Celebrations in NYC. She chairs the Cornwall Energy Task Force, is Founder of ECCO (elucidating ecological cooperation), and serves on three Environmental Ministries in New England through the UCC Congregational.
